Data Clean was founded in 1979 by Philip Bertino. Mr. Bertino worked
in the data center of a large New York bank. One of his responsibilities
was to arrange and supervise tours of the data center for visitors of
the bank. It is important to remember that in the 1970s computers were
not as common as today and their size and capabilities were intimidating
- the data center was one of the highlights for bank visitors. Unfortunately,
because of the need for constant technical maintenance, the computers
and their environment always looked dirty.
Dirty computers was not the image Mr. Bertino wanted to project on behalf of the bank. When he asked IBM to clean the equipment, they responded that they wouldn't touch the equipment unless it was broken. Pursuing his only other option, Mr. Bertino requested the building janitors to clean the data center. This choice ended in disaster. The untrained janitors spilled cleaning solutions into the equipment and used too much water on the floor. From his own experience, Mr. Bertino realized there existed an opportunity to perform specialized cleaning services for his and other data centers. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, Data Clean can boast thousands of customers and service centers in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Mexico, and Hong Kong.
